Use EN ISO 12100:2010 to build the design brief before panels, doors, interlocks or safety functions are selected. The exact solution still depends on the machine risk assessment, applicable EU framework, current standards and any relevant C-type machinery standard.

WHY IT MATTERS
When access, tasks and hazards are understood early, the project can make deliberate decisions about guard runs, doors, visibility, interlocking and maintenance instead of redesigning them late.
EU STATUS + DESIGN CONTEXT
Harmonised standards are generally voluntary. Where an exact reference is published in the Official Journal, it can support presumption of conformity only for the essential requirements it covers. It does not replace the complete risk assessment, technical file, conformity procedure or machine-specific requirements.
The current consolidated citation decision supports Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Check the precise reference, restrictions and transition dates.
Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies generally from 20 January 2027. Do not assume a Directive-era citation automatically answers the future Regulation position.
A machine-specific C-type standard may provide more specific solutions or requirements for a particular machinery category.

No. The Official Journal describes it as an A-type standard that provides an essential framework but does not, on its own, give full presumption of conformity.
No universal guard layout comes from EN ISO 12100 alone. Use the risk assessment with the relevant guard, distance, interlocking and machine-specific standards.
People with suitable knowledge of the machinery, tasks, hazards and applicable EU requirements should be involved. Complex systems may need mechanical, electrical, controls and functional-safety expertise.
