Translate the EU risk assessment into a guarding package
EN ISO 12100 provides the machinery risk-assessment and risk-reduction framework. For the guarding package, the commercial task is to give the supplier usable requirements while keeping the complete machine assessment with the responsible project team.
Describe tasks at the perimeter
Show where operators load, clean, clear faults and maintain the machine. State the access requirements that the guarding arrangement must accommodate.
Turn findings into requirements
Issue the guard zones, access strategy and constraints established by the assessment. Identify unresolved decisions so they are visible before the order is placed.
Connect supply to verification
Agree how drawings and supplier information feed into the project record. Assign responsibility for checking the complete machine, controls and installed safeguarding.

Use the project’s applicable EN reference and the responsible machinery team’s assessment. The international ISO edition is a useful technical starting point; EU harmonised status depends on the published European reference and its conditions.

Use the Commission’s machinery standards page to find the relevant Official Journal decision and amendments. Record the edition, any restrictions and applicable dates in the project file.
Plan for the transition
Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies generally from 20 January 2027. Confirm the framework that applies to the machine and its timing with the responsible project team.
Read the scope together
Review the selected standard alongside the machine-specific requirements and any relevant European annexes. Agree how the guarding package contributes to the complete machinery assessment.

EN ISO 12100: EU project questions
Is EN ISO 12100 enough to prove CE conformity?
No. The Official Journal describes it as an A-type standard that provides an essential framework but does not, on its own, give full presumption of conformity.
Does it specify guard height or mesh aperture?
No universal guard layout comes from EN ISO 12100 alone. Use the risk assessment with the relevant guard, distance, interlocking and machine-specific standards.
Can a guarding supplier’s quotation replace the EU machinery risk assessment?
No. A quotation describes a proposed supply. The responsible project team must assess the machinery and decide which risk-reduction measures are required. The resulting guarding brief helps the supplier quote a relevant configuration.
