EU machinery standards FAQs

Which EU machinery standard should I start with?

Start with EN ISO 12100 for the machinery risk-assessment and risk-reduction framework. Then apply the guard, distance, interlocking, positioning and control-system standards relevant to the hazards and machine type.

Does following all seven standards prove CE conformity?

No. Applicability depends on the machine and its risks. Presumption of conformity is limited to the requirements covered by standards whose exact references are published in the Official Journal, and the complete conformity process still applies.

What if a newer ISO edition exists than the EU-cited EN edition?

Do not silently substitute editions. Check the EN adoption, Official Journal citation, transition dates and project conformity strategy, then document the technical route used.

Where do machine-specific standards fit?

C-type standards address particular machinery categories and may provide more specific solutions or requirements. They should be checked early alongside these general machinery-safety standards.
