EN ISO 14119: planning interlocked gates for EU machinery
An EU access-gate project needs a clear connection between the gate, the interlocking device and the machine controls. Use this guide to define those interfaces and the European reference your project will use.
FROM ENGINEERING TO PROCUREMENT
Agree the gate and controls interface before procurement
EN ISO 14119 concerns interlocking devices associated with guards. The EU project brief should identify the applicable reference and separate the mechanical gate supply from the design and validation of the complete safety function.
Confirm the European reference
Ask the integrator to specify the EN edition used for the project and check its Official Journal position. The latest international ISO publication alone does not settle that question.
Coordinate mounting and movement
Agree gate opening direction, frame arrangement, device and actuator mounting, alignment and cable interfaces. Identify the party responsible for selecting each component.
Assign functional verification
Name who designs and validates the controls, stopping response, reset and restart behaviour. A mechanical gate quotation should state clearly which of those services are included.

Use the Commission’s machinery standards page to find the relevant Official Journal decision and amendments. Record the edition, any restrictions and applicable dates in the project file.
Plan for the transition
Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies generally from 20 January 2027. Confirm the framework that applies to the machine and its timing with the responsible project team.
Read the scope together
Review the selected standard alongside the machine-specific requirements and any relevant European annexes. Agree how the guarding package contributes to the complete machinery assessment.

EN ISO 14119: EU project questions
Does every interlocked guard need guard locking?
No. The need depends on risk, stopping behaviour and whether the hazard can be reached before danger has passed.
Can closing the guard automatically restart the machine?
Do not assume so. Restart behaviour needs specific risk assessment and must meet the applicable machinery and control-system requirements.
Does a quotation for an interlocked gate include safety-control validation?
Only if that service is explicitly included in the agreed scope. Confirm responsibilities for device selection, wiring, logic, stopping performance and validation with the machine integrator.
