WHY IT MATTERS

A locked gate is not the same thing as controlled energy

Perimeter guards manage access. Safe intervention also depends on what happens to hazardous energy when somebody crosses the boundary and begins work.

EU STATUS + DESIGN CONTEXT

Use the standard inside the complete conformity strategy

Harmonised standards are generally voluntary. Where an exact reference is published in the Official Journal, it can support presumption of conformity only for the essential requirements it covers. It does not replace the complete risk assessment, technical file, conformity procedure or machine-specific requirements.

Directive period

The current consolidated citation decision supports Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Check the precise reference, restrictions and transition dates.

Regulation transition

Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies generally from 20 January 2027. Do not assume a Directive-era citation automatically answers the future Regulation position.

C-type standards

A machine-specific C-type standard may provide more specific solutions or requirements for a particular machinery category.

EN ISO 14118:2018 FAQs

Is unexpected start-up prevention the same as emergency stop?

No. Emergency stop is a complementary protective function for emergencies; it should not be treated as energy isolation or a complete safe-intervention method.

Does this replace site lockout procedures?

No. Designed-in measures and workplace isolation procedures need to support each other.

Is EN ISO 14118:2018 in the current EU list?

It is listed in the current consolidated harmonised-standards decision for the Machinery Directive. Confirm the applicable EU framework and current citation before use.
