EN ISO 13855 positioning of machine safeguards

Four conversations before the design is frozen

Use EN ISO 13855:2010 to position a safeguard so the hazardous movement can stop before a person reaches it. The exact solution still depends on the machine risk assessment, applicable EU framework, current standards and any relevant C-type machinery standard.

Define the approach scenario

Identify how a person could approach, reach over, reach through or bypass the protective field or device.

Establish total system response

Machine stopping performance includes more than the sensor response; the whole safety function and machine must be considered.

Calculate and protect the position

Use the applicable standard method, device geometry and foreseeable reach path to set the minimum position.

Test the installed result

Measure response where required and verify the physical installation, detection coverage and reset arrangement.

WHY IT MATTERS

A light curtain is only protective when it is in the right place

Device selection, calculated distance, stopping performance and bypass prevention belong in the same design review. Moving the device later can change the entire safeguarding case.

EU STATUS + DESIGN CONTEXT

Use the standard inside the complete conformity strategy

Harmonised standards are generally voluntary. Where an exact reference is published in the Official Journal, it can support presumption of conformity only for the essential requirements it covers. It does not replace the complete risk assessment, technical file, conformity procedure or machine-specific requirements.

Directive period

The current consolidated citation decision supports Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Check the precise reference, restrictions and transition dates.

Regulation transition

Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies generally from 20 January 2027. Do not assume a Directive-era citation automatically answers the future Regulation position.

C-type standards

A machine-specific C-type standard may provide more specific solutions or requirements for a particular machinery category.

Edition and Official Journal note

The current consolidated EU decision lists EN ISO 13855:2010 for the Machinery Directive. A newer international edition exists, so confirm the exact EN edition and Official Journal status before specifying. Check the current consolidated EU decision and Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 at the point of use.

Is there one safe distance for every light curtain?

No. The position depends on the approach, system response, device characteristics, machine behaviour and the applicable standard method.

Can I use the newest ISO edition automatically for EU presumption of conformity?

Do not assume that. The newest international publication and the edition cited in the EU Official Journal may differ. Check the exact EN reference and applicable legal framework.

Does this standard replace EN ISO 13857?

No. EN ISO 13855 addresses positioning safeguards based on approach and stopping performance; EN ISO 13857 addresses reach prevention using safety distances and protective structures.
