Four conversations before the design is frozen

Use EN ISO 13849-1:2023 to define what each safeguarding function must do and how reliably it must perform. The exact solution still depends on the machine risk assessment, applicable EU framework, current standards and any relevant C-type machinery standard.

Define the safety function

State the trigger, required machine response, safe state, reset behaviour and conditions for restart.

Determine the required performance

Use the machinery risk assessment and applicable standards to establish the performance required of each function.

Design the complete chain

Consider input devices, logic, outputs, diagnostics, architecture, component data and foreseeable faults as one function.

Verify and validate

Confirm the design calculations and test the installed function against its specification before relying on it.

WHY IT MATTERS

A safety switch is a component. Risk reduction comes from the complete function.

The door, device, wiring, logic, contactors or drives, stopping behaviour and restart controls must work together. Buying a safety-rated component is not the same as validating a safety function.

EU STATUS + DESIGN CONTEXT

Use the standard inside the complete conformity strategy

Harmonised standards are generally voluntary. Where an exact reference is published in the Official Journal, it can support presumption of conformity only for the essential requirements it covers. It does not replace the complete risk assessment, technical file, conformity procedure or machine-specific requirements.

Directive period

The current consolidated citation decision supports Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Check the precise reference, restrictions and transition dates.

Regulation transition

Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies generally from 20 January 2027. Do not assume a Directive-era citation automatically answers the future Regulation position.

C-type standards

A machine-specific C-type standard may provide more specific solutions or requirements for a particular machinery category.

Does every interlocked door need the same performance level?

No. The required performance follows from the risk assessment, machine behaviour and applicable machinery standards.

Can a guarding supplier design the safety-related control system?

A supplier can coordinate physical guard and device interfaces, but controls design and validation should be completed by appropriately competent functional-safety specialists.

Is the 2023 edition listed in the EU Official Journal?

The current consolidated decision includes EN ISO 13849-1:2023 for the Machinery Directive. Always check transition, restrictions and the applicable EU framework at the time of the project.
